    The Scottish Government Health Directorates (SGHD) are responsible for NHSScotland and for the development of Scottish health and community care policy. The Chief Executive of NHSScotland heads the directorates and is accountable to ministers for the efficiency and performance of the service and the work of the 14 NHS Boards and 8 Special Health boards.

    Health services are delivered through NHS Boards who are responsible for the provision and management of the whole range of health services in an area including Hospitals and General Practice. In addition a further 8 Special Boards provide services including forensic mental health, education, facilities to reduce waiting times and telephone based health support services.
